In case you haven’t heard, RockMelt is a new chromium-based browser that was released in limited beta last week. The offering is meant to:
- Make it easy to share content with friends
- Speed up search
- Make it easier to connect and converse with friends
- Help you stay up-to-date on your favorite news and blogs
After just one day using the browser I am impressed with the ease-of-use and thus switched from Firefox to RockMelt as my primary browser.

The RockMelt Interface
What I Like
Sharing with Friends
I can easily share a page on Facebook by clicking the “Share” button on the toolbar. I can also share with an individual friend as well. I simply drag a page directly to a friend visible on the left side of the browser window, which is called an “edge” in RockMelt terminology. The link may then be shared on the person’s wall, in chat, or as a private message. It’s very easy and quick to share with friends.
Speed up Search
Wow, search is much faster on this browser. The search bar will display your search results in real-time, like Google Instant. But then the results can also be navigated very quick via keyboard. I can basically go through all 10 top search results in less than 30 seconds to find what I need. Very cool indeed.
Connecting with Friends
I love the left-side of my browser which displays my friends on Facebook. I can switch between two views. The first view will display all friends that are online or away on Facebook. The second view is a customizable “favorites” view where I choose which friends I want to stay connected to. By hovering over a friend I can view their latest status update. By clicking on the friend I can open up direct chat, view their wall, or go directly to their Facebook profile. All of these features make for a very socially integrated browsing experience.
Staying Up-to-Date on News and Blog
Last on my list, but absolutely the best feature of this browser. I have a list of about 15 sites that I visit daily. My usual routine is to visit them in the morning when I drink my coffee and eat breakfast. With RockMelt, each site is displayed on the right-side “edge” as an Application. Whenever new content is added to each of my sites, a number appears next to the App icon and tallies up my unread content. If I click on an App icon a nicely formatted feed of all new content is displayed and I am given the option to open up the new content in a new tab. This browser makes it easier than ever before for me to keep up with my favorite sites.
What could make it better?
Despite my praise above, there is certainly room for improvement in this browser. Below is my short list.
Integration with Other Social Networks
This browser is tightly integrated with Facebook. However, people also need integration with Twitter, FourSquare, Flickr, Delicious, LinkedIn and other social sites. I would love to see more options built into the RockMelt browser for integrating the various social sites into the browser. I understand there are plug-ins for Chrome that work with RockMelt, but none that I have found so far integrate seamlessly into the browser along with the other built-in features.
More Customization on the News Feeds
One issue I have with the way the applications edge works is that I can not modify the number of new items. For example can I limit my Woot and other Daily Deal trackers to only the most current deal? Also, can I create different Facebook feed filters – one for Co-workers, one for Family, etc.?
Email Integration
I understand that this may be in the works and look forward to it. On the Application Edge, there should also be e-mail integration so that I may preview my e-mails and know when new messages are received.
