Can Google Insights Be Used to Predict Elections?

SC

Will search volume the day prior to an election have any correlation to the winners? To find the answer, I performed a comparison between the election results and search volume as reported on Google Insights for Search

Using Insights for Search I measured state-specific search volume on the top 2 or 3 candidates in each primary. Only searches on the full names of the candidates were used. Partial names and misspellings were not included. I based the "prediction" upon the level of search volume for each candidate the day before the primary.

The results illustrate that search volume between candidates was consistent with election results less than 50% of the time. Using my approach, search volume was correct in 8 out of the 20 primaries. Promising? No. But admittedly, the method I used to make the prediction was very primitive. I'm sure a more advanced approach to analyzing search term volume and other activity on the web would yield more accurate predictions.

Internet Marketing Basics for Small Businesses

PPM Site

My father has run a pool management business for over 30 years. Last week he asked me to update his website because it looked dated. Out of a desire to help my father and refresh my web development skills I gladly took on the effort. Through this I realized that there are probably many small business owners who have a simple, basic site and no more. For my father, I went a little further than create a basic site. Each of these small improvements are strategies that are all small business owners should employ.

Delicious is Saved!

Earlier this year it leaked that Yahoo was shutting down their Delicious social bookmarking service. This caused quite a stir among existing users, including myself. Bloggers and tech websites covered the story and many published articles on alternatives to Delicious. Assuming the service was shutting down, many users migrated to other platforms such as Diigo and Evernote. I experimented with both, but settled on Evernote.

This morning Yahoo sent an e-mail to all users to inform them that Delicious had been purchased by the founders of YouTube, and would continue to live on.

The letter is below. Will I return to Delicious? I’m not sure, it depends on what type of service AVOS offers. If it is more compelling than Evernote I may switch. It’s good to know that Delicious will continue though because I’m sure many users preferred it’s simplicity over alternatives such as Diigo and Evernote.

The letter:

Dear Delicious User,
Yahoo! is excited to announce that Delicious has been acquired by the founders of YouTube, Chad Hurley and Steve Chen. As creators of the largest online video platform, Hurley and Chen have firsthand expertise enabling millions of consumers to share their experiences with the world. Delicious will become part of their new Internet company, AVOS.

To continue using Delicious, you must agree to let Yahoo! transfer your bookmarks to AVOS. After a transition period and after your bookmarks are transferred, you will be subject to the AVOS terms of service and privacy policy.

Reasons to let Yahoo! transfer your bookmarks
• Continue uninterrupted use of Delicious.
• Keep your Delicious account and all your bookmarks.
• Enjoy the same look and feel of Delicious today plus future product innovations.

What happens if you do not transfer your bookmarks
• Delicious in its current form will be available until approximately July 2011.
• After that, you will no longer be able to use your existing Delicious account and will not have
access to your existing bookmarks or account information.

About AVOS
AVOS is a new Internet company founded by Chad Hurley and Steve Chen who, in 2005, founded YouTube, the world’s largest online video platform. Before YouTube, Hurley and Chen were early employees at PayPal, a leading online payment service that is now part of eBay. Delicious will become a part of AVOS, based in San Mateo, California.

Quora Question Guidelines

I recently signed up for Quora, a question and answer service similar to Yahoo Answers. Below is a description of the service from Quora.

“Quora is a continually improving collection of questions and answers created, edited, and organized by everyone who uses it. The most important thing is to have each question page become the best possible resource for someone who wants to know about the question.”

When I signed up for the site it prompted me with a quiz to help me understand the best way to phrase a question. I thought this was interesting. How many Yahoo Answer pages have you visited or heard of where the question is completely off-the-wall or incomprehensible? It seems Quora wants to avoid this problem and keep their content fresh, clean, and easy to find. I thought it would be worth it to post the question guidelines and quiz below:

Quora Question Guidelines

  • Use proper spelling, grammar and punctuation
  • Each question should be a complete sentence, with correct spelling, grammar and formatting. It should begin with a capital letter and end with a question mark.
  • Don’t capitalize arbitrary words. If you want to emphasize a particular word or phrase use italics, not ALLCAPS.
  • Avoid profanity.
  • Do not use the second person in your answers. Leave out phrases like ‘Does anyone here know…’ or ‘Can anyone recommend..
    • Instead of ‘Do you think King Arthur was a just king?’, ask ‘Was King Arthur a just king?’
  • Avoid surveys and polls, which invite personal opinion, e.g. ‘What’s the best thing that’s ever happened to you?’ Rephrase these questions to directly ask what you want to know.
    • For example, ‘Do you think the Olympics should include curling?’ should be turned into ‘Should the Olympics include curling? Why or why not?’
  • Give your question enough context that anyone can understand what you’re asking, no matter when or where they read your question.
    • For example, instead of ‘Who was the guest star on last night’s Law & Order?’, include clarifying details like ‘Who was the guest star on the Feb 16, 2009 episode of Law & Order?
  • Your question should not be a rhetorical question, a classified ad, or a job posting (though it’s OK to ask general questions about hiring). Use a Quora post for this type of content.
  • Don’t ask questions that would make private individuals uncomfortable or are personal attacks on other people.

The correct answers are underlined.

RockMelt | First Impressions After One Day

In case you haven’t heard, RockMelt is a new chromium-based browser that was released in limited beta last week. The offering is meant to:

  1. Make it easy to share content with friends
  2. Speed up search
  3. Make it easier to connect and converse with friends
  4. Help you stay up-to-date on your favorite news and blogs

After just one day using the browser I am impressed with the ease-of-use and thus switched from Firefox to RockMelt as my primary browser.

RockMelt Interface

The RockMelt Interface

What I Like

Sharing with Friends

I can easily share a page on Facebook by clicking the “Share” button on the toolbar. I can also share with an individual friend as well. I simply drag a page directly to a friend visible on the left side of the browser window, which is called an “edge” in RockMelt terminology. The link may then be shared on the person’s wall, in chat, or as a private message. It’s very easy and quick to share with friends.

Speed up Search

Wow, search is much faster on this browser. The search bar will display your search results in real-time, like Google Instant. But then the results can also be navigated very quick via keyboard. I can basically go through all 10 top search results in less than 30 seconds to find what I need. Very cool indeed.

Connecting with Friends

I love the left-side of my browser which displays my friends on Facebook. I can switch between two views. The first view will display all friends that are online or away on Facebook. The second view is a customizable “favorites” view where I choose which friends I want to stay connected to. By hovering over a friend I can view their latest status update. By clicking on the friend I can open up direct chat, view their wall, or go directly to their Facebook profile. All of these features make for a very socially integrated browsing experience.

Staying Up-to-Date on News and Blog

Last on my list, but absolutely the best feature of this browser. I have a list of about 15 sites that I visit daily. My usual routine is to visit them in the morning when I drink my coffee and eat breakfast. With RockMelt, each site is displayed on the right-side “edge” as an Application. Whenever new content is added to each of my sites, a number appears next to the App icon and tallies up my unread content. If I click on an App icon a nicely formatted feed of all new content is displayed and I am given the option to open up the new content in a new tab. This browser makes it easier than ever before for me to keep up with my favorite sites.

What could make it better?

Despite my praise above, there is certainly room for improvement in this browser. Below is my short list.

Integration with Other Social Networks

This browser is tightly integrated with Facebook. However, people also need integration with Twitter, FourSquare, Flickr, Delicious, LinkedIn and other social sites. I would love to see more options built into the RockMelt browser for integrating the various social sites into the browser. I understand there are plug-ins for Chrome that work with RockMelt, but none that I have found so far integrate seamlessly into the browser along with the other built-in features.

More Customization on the News Feeds

One issue I have with the way the applications edge works is that I can not modify the number of new items. For example can I limit my Woot and other Daily Deal trackers to only the most current deal? Also, can I create different Facebook feed filters – one for Co-workers, one for Family, etc.?

Email Integration

I understand that this may be in the works and look forward to it. On the Application Edge, there should also be e-mail integration so that I may preview my e-mails and know when new messages are received.
